1 Artificial fragrances/Purfume
As humans we have tendency to get attracted towards sweet smelling things and we definitely love it when our skincare products smell nice. So what’s the problem with fragrance? Isn’t it good that the product smell nice? Well! It could be if they mention what they are using for fragrances. Fragrances are not regulated to prevent copying of products. So when a company mentions perfume in their ingredients list it can have any number of UNKNOWN products. Yes! You heard me right! According to a study about 50% of ingredients used in fragrances in beauty industry are toxic for our health.
2. MINERAL OIL
A petroleum by-product that coats the skin giving the skin silky smooth finish. It creates a barrier effects in screen which can cause clogging of pores. This is incredibly harmful because it interferes with skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, therefore increasing likelihood of acne. And we definitely don’t want that! Creams that combines mineral oil and paraffins can actually damage the natural skin barrier.
It is usually found in creams, lotions and ointments.
PEG (polyethylene glycols) compounds are widely used in skincare products as thickeners and softeners in lotions and creams. It also enhances the absorption of both good and bad ingredients to be absorbed faster into deeper parts of skin. If used on damaged skin, it can cause irritation and system toxicity. In addition, PEGs can reduce the skin’s moisture levels and speed up skin aging. PEG is often contaminated with both ethylene oxide (a known carcinogen) and 1,4-Dioxane (which causes respiratory problems.
4. SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) & SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES)
Usually found in 90% of personal-care products that’s foam!
It is a type of cleansing agent that make products foam, lather and bubble. In skincare, it is usually found in face washes. Sulfates are known to strip away valuable moisture and protective barriers which causes skin irritation and quickens aging.
It can be added intentionally or even when it’s not added intentionally, formaldehyde can be released from other preservatives. So avoid products with quaternium-15, DMDM-hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea or diazolidinyl urea on their labels. It may cause joint pain, skin allergies, headaches, and loss of sleep. It is carcinogenic in large amounts.
